VENEZIA – ITALY
➞ Wernice Project
WERNICE is a multifaceted project centered on graffiti. It was born in the city of Venice from the need to provide a space for this art form, often excluded from the city’s traditional circuits, while aiming to preserve its underground spirit. Venice has always been a place open to cultural dialogue, making it the perfect setting to foster a conversation about the importance of graffiti in modern society, both culturally and artistically.
The strength of WERNICE lies in the exchange of ideas, experiences, and diverse backgrounds of the artists involved — coming from different cities, countries, and generations. This dynamic mix fosters interaction and collaboration in an open and inclusive environment, where both emerging talents and established writers have the opportunity to showcase their work and share their knowledge.
More than just an exhibition, WERNICE is also a cultural platform aimed at raising awareness and breaking down stereotypes around graffiti, revealing its true artistic and social value to a wider audience.
Looking forward, WERNICE is a growing movement, open to new ideas and eager to evolve alongside the ever-changing graffiti scene.
➞ why wernice?
The title of the project is a play on words that combines “Venice”, the name of the city deliberately written in English to emphasize the project’s international scope, “Vernice” the Italian word for spray paint used by artists, and also the term commonly used to refer to the opening of an exhibition or cultural event and “We’re nice” which playfully conveys a sense of community. This multilayered pun encapsulates the project’s multifaceted identity, bridging language, culture, and artistic expression.
It’s a lighthearted way to turn the usual stereotypes around graffiti – often seen as something negative – on their head, and instead highlight the project’s positive spirit of collaboration, shared purpose, and inclusivity. Through this linguistic twist, the title invites viewers to look beyond appearances and engage with the deeper cultural dialogue the project aims to foster.
From the fusion of these elements, the letter “R” emerged as the connecting symbol between the different meanings, becoming the project’s distinctive mark. For this reason, the “R” in the logo is in constant transformation, using fonts that echo the style of tags reflecting the fluid and personal nature of graffiti culture.
